The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has officially kicked off excitement for its 51st edition, revealing its Opening Night Film alongside the first slate of titles set to premiere this September. Running from September 10–20, 2026, the festival promises another year of celebrated filmmakers, anticipated world premieres, and compelling stories from around the globe.

Leading this year’s festival is BEING HEUMANN, which will make its World Premiere as the TIFF 2026 Opening Night Film. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Siân Heder, best known for CODA, the film stars Ruth Madeley as renowned disability rights activist Judy Heumann, whose lifelong advocacy transformed accessibility and civil rights for millions around the world. The biographical drama is expected to shine a spotlight on one of the most influential figures in the disability rights movement.

Alongside the opening night announcement, TIFF has revealed two additional films joining the festival’s growing lineup. PRIMA FACIE, directed by Susanna White, and THE ASSASSIN(S), from acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Hur Jin-ho, have both been added to this year’s highly anticipated programme, offering audiences an early glimpse of the diverse storytelling set to define the festival.

The festival has also announced five films that will screen as part of its prestigious Special Presentations programme. The newly revealed titles include YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER by Bassam Tariq, ALPHA GANG from directing duo David Zellner and Nathan Zellner, GLAXO directed by Benjamín Naishtat, LOVE OF YOUR LIFE by Rachel Morrison, and THE HOUSEWIFE from Ben Shirinian. Together, the selections reflect TIFF’s continued commitment to showcasing bold, original voices from across international cinema.
